Hold on to your hats, body shamers, there’s a new festival of epic proportions in town and this weekend it showed us it’s here to stay. The inaugural Buxom Blaze Burlesque Festival came and conquered the stage and the hearts at the North Door in Austin for two stunning nights of plus-sized performance.
The Friday and Saturday night showcases brought in performers from Los Angeles to Boston and even Canada and France. As the world’s first and only burlesque festival dedicated to performers of size, these strip-teasers made history and the significance of it will be felt for a long time to come.
Headlining host, a neo-legend from the NYC scene, World Famous *BOB* pointed out in Friday night’s preshow circle that most of the performers there had to create their own productions just to have shows where plus-sized dancers could be seen. Let that sink in. Performers of size are so often told “no” based on their size alone. The performers at this fest are all making waves in their own cities just by saying fat bodies deserve to be on stage and creating a space for them.
The show itself was phenomenal. The acts spanned different styles and themes- Big is Beautiful, fun and whimsical, humorous acts about food, subversive art, cosplay, aerials, classic beauty and grace, and ultimate sex appeal through dance. The audience was served an extra large dose of beauty, creativity, talent, sexiness, humor, and raw emotion that they won’t soon forget.
The 2018 Buxom Blaze Burlesque Festival Headliners were absolutely outstanding. Ginger Snaps, the producer of the fest, performed her Dr. Manhattan aerial sphere act that got her booked in the 2018 Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekender. Bianca Coal brought the classic and the weird, with so much joy on her face it was impossible not to smile back at her. Ri Ri Syncyr is just fucking gorgeous in every movement. Jasper St. James gave us his beautiful voice, and some booty. Austin’s award-winning Fat Bottom Cabaret did what they do best, as always. Miss Botero showed us how the French do remarkable, uncomfortable, captivating, silent, performance art.
Unlike most burlesque festivals, Buxom Blaze gave five awards as chosen by the audience:
Firestarter: Bubble Bordeaux
Master of Music: Ophelia Zayna Hart
Fat and Flexy: Miss Helvetica Bold
Kostume Kween: Mia Moore
Favorite Weirdo: Goldie Goldstein and Kinsey Scale
While I 100% agree with all of these, I also picked a few more awards of my own:
